I thought The Shadow Speaker was really good. it covered a ton of ground (a shocking amount, really), and I suspect that if I hadn’t previously read Zahrah the Windseeker and Kabu Kabu I would have been a bit disoriented by the sheer volume of worldbuilding information (Who Fears Death was helpful, too, for that matter, in terms of getting a handle on the way Nnedi Okorafor thinks about her stories/worlds; I had an idea of what to expect going in, is what I’m getting at).
the characters were great, the story was great, Ejii’s approach to problem-solving (and steady insistence on that approach) was great, the writing had a couple awkward moments (weird adverb usage or incorrect punctuation) but not to the point of detracting from the overall qaulity of the book imo.
