So Hard to Say was good. very simple, but sweet (they’re 8th graders, after all). for all the “ugh we don’t need more coming out stories” rhetoric that goes on I actually haven’t read many books that I would call specifically “coming out stories”? but this was, and I think it was good to have in the world.

if it had been written in 2015 instead of 2004, Xio’s extremely heterosexual approach to the world (”I’m thirteen. Where’s my boyfriend?” straight people.png) and her relationship with Frederick (“He should feel guilty.”) would have been really irritating, but instead I was able to look past it and appreciate the rest of her story.

well, I guess what that means is it was irritating, but I found enough to balance it out such that I’d give it 4.5 stars.
