Sioned Davies’s translation of the Mabinogion is great. my comprehensive review is:
- I wish there were some more notes about some things (wtf was going on with the dwarfs in “Peredur Son of Efrog”) and fewer notes about others (I don’t need “steward” to be defined every time it appears).
- Lleu Llaw Gyffes did nothing wrong; Blodeuedd did some things wrong but under extenuating circumstances
- I’m officially a Cai apologist now
- Geraint fab Erbin is just a bandit. knights are, fundamentally, just bandits but with legal sanction behind their banditry. much like cops in that way.
- Neol Cŷn Crog’s name means “Neol of Hanging Cock”. as in penis (cŷn, lit. “chisel”), not as in chicken. I’m never going to be over this, especially since his name is obviously where McKillip got the names of Mara Croeg (the most beautiful woman of An) and her husband Cyn Croeg in the Riddle-Master trilogy. did she know.
- Gwrhyr Gwalstawd Ieithoedd and Gwalchmai good
- Welsh good
moods: adventurous, inspiring
