it finally came — “it” being The Encounter, the third of the Animorphs graphic novels (art and adaptation by Chris Grine, but most of the text is verbatim from the novel). my comprehensive review is: holy shit this was good. the adaptation is incredible, the art is great, and — I was scared they would, especially after the adjustment of the street harassment scene in The Visitor (which to be clear I think was probably for the best) — they did not tone it down. in fact, the fact that the graphic novel doesn’t have a constant flow of text means that when Rachel asks Tobias what he thought would happen when he was flying at the glass dome in the mall, the following panel is just the hawk staring out at you and it is. god damn.
I was hoping desperately that this series would make it far enough to get to this book, and it did not disappoint. I really, really hope they’ll get to keep going — now that they’ve made it here I think their next goal should be at least book 7, far enough that they finally get a real, meaningful victory. if they have to stop, that would be the place to do it.
other highlights:
is the plot of this one the most coherent of the books? I mean, it’s no The Unknown, but it’s definitely not a book you read for the external plot. it’s about the vibes. it’s about the inner struggle. it’s about what it means to be human. and it is so, so good.
